Why can't I type digital entries in Unpack?

The raw entry matters

Typing can be useful, but it often pulls people toward editing, formatting, and productivity. A paper journal gives you a private place to be messy before the thought becomes organized. Unpack protects that order: write first, process after.

There is research behind that too. Expressive writing research suggests that writing about emotional experiences can support reflection and well-being for some people, even though it is not a cure-all. Newer neuroscience research has also found that handwriting can involve broader brain connectivity than typewriting. The evidence does not mean everyone must journal by hand forever. It means handwriting has real value, and we want Unpack to stand with that value.

Why scanning comes first today

Today, the Unpack flow begins with a handwritten journal entry because we want the first step to stay analog and emotionally honest. After you scan the page, Unpack extracts the text, creates a bullet-point summary, identifies tangents, tags emotions, and helps you keep reflecting through prompts or voice inside those tangents.

Voice will become another starting point later

We also believe voice can be a powerful form of release, especially when your thoughts move faster than your hand. Today, voice is a feature for continuing inside a tangent after scanning. In the future, we plan to let users start with voice as well.

What we believe

Unpack is not trying to become another blank digital note app. In an age of AI and instant gratification, we believe there is value in slowing down, being intentional, and giving your thoughts somewhere analog to land. Your notebook still gets to be the place where the raw human release happens. Unpack comes after: to help organize, remember, and reflect.
